Temple Emanu-El

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Mission
Our mission is to ensure that Temple Emanu-El of Long Beach (TELB) is affirming for all Jews and their loved ones. Inclusivity is the foundation of the congregation. We welcome people from all faiths, genders, races, and abilities. Judaism and social justice are inseparable.
Goals

We aim for TELB to be the most inclusive synagogue on the south shore of Long Island. To accomplish this, we must talk about and see each other as who we are, and we must make explicit efforts to center diversity, equity and inclusion; invisibility or neutrality are not inclusive. TELB works for inclusion and equity simultaneously on the lines of gender sexuality, race, ethnicity, economics, and ability. TELB will continue to promote the representation, participation and fair treatment of all it members, potential members, and the wider community. We are committed to combating bias and hatred through institutional efforts, education, community collaboration, friendship, collective action, and compassion.

What is DEI?
DEI stands for diversity, Equity, and inclusion. It responds to historic injustices and promotes the value of everyone and every group. Specifically, diversity is the presence of more than one type of person by traits like gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, age, national origin, religion, ability/disability, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, and physical appearance. Inclusion is creating environments in which and individual or group can be welcomed , respected, supported and valued. Equity is the promotion of justice within institutions to ensure fair processes and resource distribution across groups.
